ProtonMail with a Custom Domain
I use ProtonMail with a custom domain to avoid handing everything over to Google or Microsoft (There’s dozens of us!).
If you’re doing the same and use Cloudflare for DNS, the Complete-ProtonMail-Custom-Domain-Security-Setup-with-Cloudflare Guide is essential reading.
I think a lot of people tend to go all or nothing - either they just use Gmail, or go all the way down the rabbit hole and try to self-host email with their own domain.
For better or worse, email is very important today. I want to make sure I receive all the emails I need, and equally important, ensure that recipients of my emails can actually receive what I send.
Using something like ProtonMail means that at least Google doesn’t get their hands on my entire mailbox. And using a custom domain allows me to move to a different provider without having to change all my accounts.
As for Cloudflare, I use their services throughout my homelab and self-hosting setup. You could argue I’m just trading one overlord for another, but truth is, today they provide a service by helping safeguard and access my data without having their hands on it directly. For now they’re a lesser evil, and I’m still better off when it comes to privacy.
